Pitching for jobs that require PHP: tips

Might be useful to start a list of useful tips when you are pitching for work that requires PHP.

Personally I find you should NEVER actually DO any coding or development at the stage of pitching because you leave yourself open to a lot of wasted effort.

Therefore you can do some front-end sketches and basic wireframes but never actually develop any working elements of a finished site - showing what it would look like is fair enough but don't start coding: you could waste a lot of time and effort and it's even possible that your code will turn up down the line in the development they do themselves or get someone else to do!
